What the piece shows
Across 8 km, the pyramid fits whole. You follow the four ridges that cut it up: the Hörnli to the north-east, the normal route, the Furggen to the south-east, the Lion on the Italian side, the Zmutt to the north-west with its long spine. Below, the Matterhorn glacier and the Zmutt glacier fan out. The floor of the Zmutt valley drops under 2,000 m: close to 2,500 m of height difference between it and the point. The Hörnli hut shows up at 3,260 m on the ridge.
