What the piece shows
At 14 km, the frame takes the whole ridge, from the western end of Chasseral to the summit mast. To the north, the Saint-Imier valley and its parallel side valleys. To the south, the slope drops without a single terrace down to the shore of Lake Biel, at 429 m: 1,177 m of difference over seven kilometres. The Jura is not flat, and the piece shows it. The lake water comes out as a perfectly smooth plane, a sharp contrast with the slope.
