What the piece shows
Fuji is an isolated stratovolcano: nothing around it to compete, the cone takes up the whole disc. About 3,000 m between the plain and the summit crater, which is 700 m across. On the south-east flank, the Hōei crater — the breach left by the 1707 eruption — breaks the symmetry; that is the detail that makes the piece recognisable. The even slopes come through very well at 30 m resolution: no awkward smoothing here. Fuji is the easiest subject in the catalogue.
