What the piece shows
Across 12 km, the piece shows the whole Alpstein: the three parallel ridges, the Lisengrat running from the Säntis to the Altmann, and the bowl of the Seealpsee squeezed between two walls. The contrast is sharp — 1,143 m at the lake, 2,502 m at the summit, close to 1,360 m of height difference over barely three kilometres. To the north, the ground collapses at once towards the Appenzell hills. You can pick out the Schwägalp and the cable-car slope.
